A robot is going to be questioned by MPs, in what is believed to be a parliamentary first.

Pepper, a “culturally aware” android, is going to be grilled on the fourth industrial revolution.

It will get to show off in front of the Commons’ education select committee on Tuesday by fielding questions and giving a presentation.

The robot already helps teach primary school children and care for older people.

Pepper’s appearance is already sparking jokes about the usual performance of MPs, as some might argue that robotic answers are commonplace in committees.

One Twitter user quipped: “Sounds like prime minister’s question time.”

Another said: “A poorly programmed robot with a bunch of stock responses created solely for b******t marketing reasons… for some MPs, that’s an intellectual equal.”

Lucy Allan, one of the MPs on the committee, said she was “looking forward” to hearing the evidence.
